Crazy ideas
Once in a while, I get these crazy ideas of things that I want to do with my life, and I obsess over them for a while. Sometimes, I actually follow through on them. Recent examples include writing a book, and having a child. They both worked out pretty well, all things considered.

Some things I don't follow through on, but they're fun thought experiments, in any case.

One example is the healthy-and-local-food restaurant I wanted to open in Arlington Center. It would have been a sandwich shop kind of place (not an expensive sit-down gourmet restaurant), but one that would primarily offer vegetarian and vegan food, grown locally and/or organically whenever possible. Dairy intolerance? No problem. Meat averse? You'd have to ask for it anyway. Kid have a peanut allergy? You're safe. The emphasis would be on vegetables, fruits, and whole grains -- y'know, like the Whole Foods of sandwich shops, but cheaper. Anyway, it was an impractical idea, given the real estate availability and high rents in Arlington. And it would have been fun to design the experience, but it meant... well... running a restaurant! I'm not prepared to enter that particular circle of hell.

My current mini-obsession is starting an Internet radio station. For children. Well, sort of -- the kid's music I've heard so far is mostly hideous (with some excellent exceptions). A station that played only "kid music" all day would make me want to jump off a tall building. But I would *love* to have a radio station that would play interesting grownup music, but vetted for questionable lyrics, depressing stuff, dissonant and disturbing music, and so on.

"Gentle music." That's what I'd like. A mix of folk, mild classic rock, current pop, easy-on-your-ears jazz, classic show tunes once in a while, and some classical mixed in for good measure. High-quality music. Nothing to make a kid cover his ears. And no lyrics that would make a toddler look up and me and say, "Mom, what does that mean?" and force me to lie. :-)

It would be cool. Let's see... have we got lots of digital music? Check. Server? Check. Bandwidth for audio streams? Check (sort of). Desire to design the website and the aural experience? Oh yeah. :-)

I'm insane, right? Probably. Remember, this is one of the crazy ideas that I probably *won't* follow up on.

My dream project

I recently had a similar idea: create a podcast for local music. Give special attention to local groups with new releases and national indie acts touring in town soon. I figured it would connect me more with the local scene and encourage others to check out local artists.

The idea died a bit for me when I realized that 99% of indie bands are crap and that I'd have to listen to a LOT of bad music.

Could you demo this project by configuring your iTunes to stream over the net? Just tag all the candidate music as "-gentle-" and let that smart playlist run.

Hmm, yeah, the iTunes thing is an idea. But the problem is that my iTunes lives on my Mac, which is my personal laptop. If we were to serve up audio streams, we'd want to do that from our Linux box in the colo (the one that hosts http://designinginterfaces.com, among other websites). I suppose we could transfer our music over there, and tag everything there.

Yes, most indie bands are crap, in my limited experience. :-) But your idea sounds good. I'd love to occasionally hear a podcast or station that picked over it all and found the good stuff. (Didn't WFNX once have a radio show that did exactly that? I haven't listened to 'FNX in years...)

Around here, 106.7 has some pretty mild stuff. I think one of their slogans even says something about lyrics you can let your kids listen to, but I haven't exactly evaluated it from that perspective. I put it on sometimes when I want some mild background music. Not quite the variety you're talking about, though; mostly mild rock and pop, with jazz on Sunday mornings and on one of their "HD radio" channels, no show tunes or classical. I think they have an online feed, too, if you care, though it's not working on my Mac at the moment.

It's not always stuff I'd want to listen to, but like I said, for mild background music it's usually okay. Maybe that's not what you're looking for either.

[info]wolftone may have the right idea, just streaming selected iTunes stuff over the net...

I'll take a listen. Thanks for telling me about it! Yeah, if professionals are doing it, that's fine, I'll let them carry on. :-)

Believe it or not, I don't think that you are crazy - I bet that it could work well, and might even make money, if handled right. I can also imagine having multiple channels, for differing musical tastes. Or maybe the ability to have the server kick out different playlists for different users, and the ability to vote songs up or down. Getting the music might be a challenge - I haven't investigated music sources, but the podsafe network would clearly be a place to start. Possibly also the Internet Archive's music stuff, and maybe even filkers (You knew that was going to get in there somehow with me talking, didn't you?) I might have to check with my wife - I suspect that she might enjoy helping with a project like this, if you think you will take it anywhere.

And if you don't, maybe I would, given how much fun I had thinking about what I wrote above. Keep me in the loop?

Hmmm... good ideas! Yes, it would be good to draw on royalty-free (or cheap, anyway) sources for music. I need to learn more about what's out there, outside the RIAA's stranglehold. The RIAA scares me.

The problem with kicking out different playlists for different users is that it's not covered by the standard broadcast license. "Interactive" music sources are different, and I'd guess it would be a lot more complicated to figure out performance numbers and royalty payments. Yikes.

And yes, I will keep you in the loop! If anything else comes of it, I'll post to my journal, if nothing else...

I keep hearing about SteveSongs. He's got quite the following here in my town. Thanks for the nudge -- I'll go check out his music. At the least, I may buy some for my own kid. :-)

Agreed. We saw him at a house concert you did at [info]pekmez's some years ago. It was a blast. Especially his Harry Potter song :)

Steve *is* great! It's definitely worth getting to a concert of his (they sell out, so you should actually plan in advance) and the CDs he left us as a thank you for hosting the house concert fell into much greater rotation when [info]gljiva started actively enjoying kids' music. We have a complete set now.

It's so funny that you'd post something like this today; I just an hour ago ago got off a plane and am back home from four days in LA, where I tracked eight songs for an upcoming children's album. Hopefully it will be out in May or June.

And I join Wes in endorsing Steve Roslonek. Great guy and great music.

It's a mostly a cappella album with songs from Disney movies like You've Got A Friend in Me, Baby of Mine, Bear Necessities, as well as old standards like Pick Yourself Up, Accentuate the Positive, and High Hopes.

A very family-friendly project. :-)

That sounds like a fun thing to do.

Crazy ideas: I still want to start up that specialty mailorder chocolate truffle business with you that we hypothesized oh, 10 years ago..:-)

Ah yes, that was another one of our crazy ideas! That was fun to think about. Of course, we missed our window of opportunity -- now everyone and her sister makes handcrafted truffles and sells them at a ridiculous price.

If we ever want to seriously revisit it, think about this: there's a place in Jamaica Plain that rents industrial kitchen space to startups. That would be a fabulous place to start a truffle-making business, except for the fact that Jamaica Plain is hard for both of us to get to! :-) (I believe they were in financial trouble last year, but they may have been rescued, IIRC.)
